Conservation Efforts

There is a multitude of ways to conserve and protect the habitat of fish populations worldwide. Sea plants provide the oxygen and attract food and grant protection for fish in most waters. However, there are many plants that are harmful and can choke a lake. This is unfortunate as aquatic plants are extremely difficult to control. Building reefs that are artificial that will attract and provide a home for both freshwater and saltwater fish are prevalent throughout much of the world.

Cutting, poisoning, uprooting excess plant growth and introducing fish that eat vegetation have all been tried to manage weed growth. One of the best controls is limiting the plant food that enters the water in the form of sewage, fertilizers or farm waste. Building artificial reefs to attract and provide a home for both freshwater and saltwater fish is another strategy for fishery managers to improve the quality and efficiency of some fisheries. This can provides cover, food and safety for fish. Artificial reefs can be as easy as sinking a a weighted object in a lake or as complex as sinking an old ship offshore in the ocean. Reefs are extremely vital as the provide an area for the bottom run of the food chain to advance. Algae and plankton that live there are a source of food for bait fish and game fish. Managing the habit and how it is done is closely watched by authorities.
